TALOS AI4SSH at the University of Crete will participate in the 13th Annual Meeting of the European Coin Find Network and Nomisma.org, hosted by the University of Bari Aldo Moro, Italy, on 15–18 September 2026.
Maria Papadopoulou and Christophe Roche will present “Κρητικὸς Χαρακτήρ – Cretan Character: a Digital Numismatics FAIR Dataset”, on behalf of the research team: Katerina Panagopoulou, Maria Papadopoulou, Christophe Roche, Tonia Lourentzaki and Dimitrios Malliarakis.
Cretan Character combines numismatic research with Semantic Web technologies to study coins issued by Cretan cities and the Cretan Koinon from the mid-fifth century BCE to the second century CE, as well as their circulation across the Mediterranean and the Near East. Guided by the FAIR principles—Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable—the project links coin descriptions, images, inscriptions and issuing authorities in a structured knowledge graph.
The dataset was curated using TEDI by Tonia Lourentzaki and Dimitrios Malliarakis as part of their internship work at TALOS. It is available online through Humanistica Digitalia.
The presentation will introduce the project’s conceptual model and demonstrate how historical research questions can be expressed as SPARQL queries to investigate Cretan civic identities, political authority, religious practices and networks of exchange. Το TALOS AI4SSH του Πανεπιστημίου Κρήτης θα συμμετάσχει στη 13η Ετήσια Συνάντηση του European Coin Find Network και του Nomisma.org, η οποία φιλοξενείται από το Πανεπιστήμιο Aldo Moro του Μπάρι, στην Ιταλία, στις 15–18 Σεπτεμβρίου 2026.
Η Μαρία Παπαδοπούλου και ο Christophe Roche θα παρουσιάσουν την εργασία “Κρητικὸς Χαρακτήρ – Cretan Character: a Digital Numismatics FAIR Dataset”, εκ μέρους της ερευνητικής ομάδας: Κατερίνα Παναγοπούλου, Μαρία Παπαδοπούλου, Christophe Roche, Τόνια Λουρεντζάκη και Δημήτριος Μαλλιαράκης.
Το Cretan Character συνδυάζει τη νομισματική έρευνα με τεχνολογίες του Σημασιολογικού Ιστού για τη μελέτη νομισμάτων που εκδόθηκαν από κρητικές πόλεις και το Κοινό των Κρητών, από τα μέσα του 5ου αιώνα π.Χ. έως τον 2ο αιώνα μ.Χ., καθώς και της κυκλοφορίας τους στη Μεσόγειο και την Εγγύς Ανατολή. Με βάση τις αρχές FAIR, το έργο συνδέει περιγραφές νομισμάτων, εικόνες, επιγραφές και εκδίδουσες αρχές σε έναν δομημένο γράφο γνώσης.
Το σύνολο δεδομένων επιμελήθηκαν με τη χρήση του TEDI η Τόνια Λουρεντζάκη και ο Δημήτριος Μαλλιαράκης, στο πλαίσιο της πρακτικής τους άσκησης στο TALOS. Είναι διαθέσιμο μέσω του Humanistica Digitalia.
Η παρουσίαση θα εισαγάγει το εννοιολογικό μοντέλο του έργου και θα δείξει πώς ιστορικά ερευνητικά ερωτήματα μπορούν να διατυπωθούν ως ερωτήματα SPARQL για τη μελέτη της κρητικής πολιτειακής ταυτότητας, της πολιτικής εξουσίας, των θρησκευτικών πρακτικών και των δικτύων ανταλλαγής.
